Oh, Florida!: How America's Weirdest State Influences the Rest of the Country, by Craig Pittman

A New York Times Bestseller"Painstakingly reported and researched...compulsively readable."―The New York Times "An extraordinary catalog of 'weird Florida'...the definitive guide."―The Los Angeles TimesFlorida. That name. That combination of sounds. Three simple syllables packing mixed messages. To some people, it’s a paradise. To others, it’s a punch line. As award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author Craig Pittman shows, it's both of these and, more important, it’s a Petri dish, producing trends that end up influencing the rest of the country. Oh, Florida!: How America's Weirdest State Influences the Rest of the Country embraces those contradictions and shows how they fit together to make this the most interesting state. Without Florida there would be no NASCAR, no Bettie Page pinups, no Glenn Beck radio rants, no USA Today, no “Stand Your Ground,” . . . you get the idea. To outsiders, Florida seems baffling. It’s a state where the voters went for Barack Obama twice, yet elected a Tea Party candidate as governor. Florida is touted as a carefree paradise, yet it’s also known for its perils-alligators, sinkholes, pythons, hurricanes, and sharks, to name a few. It attracts 90 million visitors a year, some drawn by its impressive natural beauty, others bewitched by its manmade fantasies. Florida couldn’t be Florida without that sense of the unpredictable, unexpected, and unusual lurking behind every palm tree. But there is far more to Florida than its sideshow freakiness. Oh, Florida! explains how Florida secretly, subtly influences all the other states in the Union, both for good and for ill. Florida is wild and weird―and that’s okay!

If you live in Florida, you need to read this. If you want to live in Florida, you should read this. If you are looking for any excuse to not live in Florida, or even visit it it, you must read this. It was well written, interesting, educational and funny.

This book is a fun read but containing many serious events that occurred, some not too many years ago, others recent, some many years ago. Mr. Pittman, a native Floridian as is his wife and kids, covers his state from the pan handle to Key West. He writes from today to yesterday.. I ordered this book because I lived in Florida for nineteen years. Two of my children were born in Florida. I have traveled all over the state and go back every year to visit. Key West seems not to be in the United States, but in a foreign country. Traveling down the keys, so much sky, so much water, very little land. One man I spoke to goes on vacation every year to Florida. People don't wear too many clothes he says. But Florida does get awfully hot.The book contains eighteen chapters about different times, history, politics, hurricanes, weather, land plus so much more. Craig Pittman is a journalist, a reporter and a columnist for the Tampa Bay Times. He grew up in Pensacola, his wife in Sarasota. So many Floridians have moved to this state from other places. This state is a melting pot of people from other states, Canada, the Caribbean, French speaking Haitians, Cubans, others parts of the Americas, plus Europeans, Africans, others. Many different religions, Santeria being one.The quiet area around Lake Wales is nice, but the state is growing too fast, too much. The Everglades is being invaded by people building homes. Tourists come to Florida to see a place so different than their own home states. And to enjoy the warm weather. The Everglades looks so much like the earth must have looked before mankind came into being. Alligators, an ancient race of dinosaurs, still are so much in evident and swim around in the swamps. They belong here and have lived here long before people did.I learned much from Mr. Pittman's writing, so much about events I knew nothing about. Mr Pittman goes deep into his writing about Florida. He writes about how Disney World came into being, tells much about the politics of Florida. There are stories about crimes and criminals, education, segregation, plus so much more. This book is great, tells it like it is, humorous, serious, laugh out loud, but with many reasons to think. This is a good book for anyone who wants to know more about Florida. Mr Pittman covers much. A land of summer, of tourists, nightclubs, restaurants and water, water all around. It does attract strange people.

When I reached the last page, I wanted more. This is not a book full of goofy Florida stories, although there are plenty of those. It tells these stories from the Bad Old Days and links them with others of more recent times drawing themes and lessons from them. It is shocking to see how Senator Cruz or Governor Bush, two names n the news now, continue long traditions of folly that began in the Civil War era. Many of Florida's problems come from a frontier mentality and the fact most Floridians are from someplace else. The population lacks an 'institutional memory' so to speak. Folks who are not really from Florida see little reason to demand and pay for government services like health care, decent prisons or schools.Still there is wisdom in Florida too. Lots of smart cookies are from the Sunshine State, and good ideas like Sunshine Laws come from there. So it lets us see how Florida reflects the best and the worst of the US. Educational and amusing.

I was once a reporter in Florida. While there, I met a man who had run for office 40+ times before being elected Supervisor of Elections in Hillsborough County. The county commissioners had him committed to a mental institution. Three weeks later, doctors there released him for lack of evidence. He later ran for Governor, declaring himself "the only candidate to be declared sane." While on the campaign trail, he regularly faced the audience and mooned them. (I asked him not to do so on the television show I hosted, and he cheerfully complied.)I knew another man, a folk singer, who erected a giant statue of a phallus on his front lawn. He was arrested when neighborhood children were found dancing around it.Neither story made this book. These stories are even more outrageous. Toward the end, the author gets serious and tells the most important Florida stories, those about racism. It's an excellent balance to the portrait of a state that influences so many of us, for better or worse.

I am a native Floridian and bought this book as soon as it was published. It is a wonderfully written, hilarious, truthful narrative of Florida and its people. I was laughing out loud over and over and read the entire book this weekend. Craig Pittman captures the irony, diversity, and bizarre stories of America's bellweather state. Great reading for anyone !

This book is well-written and if you've lived in Florida, it speaks to you with his recap of the zany stuff that happens each day of the week in Florida. He gives plenty of examples of the daft stuff that happens in Florida -- from crazy visitors, to locals, to animals, to the legislature and the various governors. It's a book that will give you a lot of laughs at the craziness of it all but it will also scare the bejesus out of you to know of the things that have happened and continue to happen legislatively and politically in the state. It's often a funny book but with a dark, serious side too so don't expect it to all be a barrel of laughs like a Dave Barry book.If you've lived in Florida, you will read it and shake your head in agreement because you'll have witnessed much of it yourself. If you are thinking of moving to Florida, read it and think about it and ask yourself if you can deal with what will greet you when you live there.
