March 9th, 2019DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A MODERN, DETAILED AND COMPLETE GUIDE FOR GROWING CANNABIS. DO buy this book if you are curious about what a well known and respected old-school grower and breeder has to say about his craft. Published in 2003, it is not up to date with the the recent developments in growing, and is not/was not intended as a comprehensive how-to book on growing "modern" cannabis [strains] with all the relevant details, methods, considerations, options etc. It's a rather small book and does not cover all the details of modern growing that a beginning, intermediate, or advanced grower may be looking for as I write this review in early 2019. For that I would recommend either The Cannabis Grow Bible by Greg Green or The Cannabis Encyclopedia by Jorge Cervantes, both available on this website.Forget the title of this book - it's inaccurate and misleading at this point in time. It should have read, "A renown veteran grower and breeder informally shares his insights and anecdotes from decades of cultivating exceptional cannabis." That's how I perceived this book as I read it, enjoyed it, and ultimately arrived at my 4 star rating. This book is best suited for the curious who would like to to get inside the mind of an old-school grower and breeder for a brief glimpse of the past and the not-quite-present-anymore state of cannabis.I enjoyed his memories and comments about the great landrace strains, as well as casual insights into growing and breeding cannabis that can still be applied to the modern scene (and shared thoughts about being a positive and productive member of the cannabis community in general). This is a book to enjoy casually, for those who like extra-curricular, recreational studies on the tangents and peripheries of their main subject. It's not required or essential reading for people who just want to get down to the hard details of modern growing and breeding, but still retains some technical as well as philosophical value that hasty modern youngsters too often overlook.Perhaps my favorite aspect of this book is the various casual ways DJ Short seems to be indirectly saying that aside from the technical know-how of growing and breeding, your attitude and outlook are of equal importance. Being smart is also being safe, being patient, being cool. I'm currently witnessing way too many people in my area employing a destination-only mentality, and then looking for shortcuts. The results are awful, annoying and embarrassing. Here I get the feeling that the journey is just as important as the destination. Nevertheless, I also get the vibe that DJ Short is encouraging us to experiment, even if we are clueless morons, solely for the pure love and joy of the journey (this does not include matters of safety regarding local, state and federal law enforcement, and electrical fire hazards, as well as honesty and integrity in your interactions with others). Do the very best you can with whatever you have, and always be prepared to learn more and to do more (humility, respect, patience, dedication). He mentions early on trying to grow with nothing but a simple desk lamp, and in the process suddenly triggered a forgotten fond memory of my own, where I tried to do the exact same thing 23 years ago - it actually works, but you will not get a quality result at all, lol, but the point is that I enjoyed every moment of my ridiculous grow, in the fullness of my youthful enthusiasm, naivete and ignorance. That's the first and most important unwritten rule: truly love what you're doing. The rest will eventually fall into place if you are open to learning and exploring, and don't mind putting in the labor and making mistakes. With the love, passion and dedication in place you will overcome the rest of the obstacles, sooner or later, depending on your aptitude.Of course the author rarely-to-never actually comes right out and directly says all this, but that's the vibe and takeaway I got from my casual and enjoyable read of this 93 page book (again, modern comprehensive grow books are several hundred pages in length). It's a total coffee table book, or if you prefer, a marvelous toilet read, and I mean no disrespect. I read the entire Lord Chesterfield's Letters To His Son on the toilet. Good times :)Now of course there are parts I wasn't as fond of - two star moments that were perhaps only a matter of writing or editing style, and one philosophical difference of opinion that might be nothing more than the choice of words being misleading, or since it was written over 15 years ago, an opinion that has since been modified or changed entirely - as time unfolds we are all allowed to change our minds an infinite number of times when new considerations arise. You really need to know what kind of reader you are, and what your goals are before choosing to buy or borrow this book. I maintain that this is a casual read, not an instruction manual; neither complete and up to date, nor without value either, so choose wisely and don't rate it poorly just because the same ignorance and haste that is going to make you a bad grower has also made you a bad researcher and decision maker. And finally I would like to say that I think there should be more books of this character - virtual memoirs of the veterans and experts, sharing their memories and insights, and the path they trod on their way to greatness.
It reads more as a memoir than a "how-to". For that, it is more worth your time and a read than any other grow book save Cevantes/Rosenthal. The book is short and reads easy with clear and concise chapters on each relevant section. It kind of makes one think how easy this is really supposed to be.... I skipped over the lighting part.
Great book, full of info, on breeding and history of breeding. A lot of this info is free, naturally, but the book flows well, gives an in depth view of Shorts philosophy, growing and some life. Would definitely recommend. I got the physical version but plan on getting the kindle version as well.
I have been following DJ Short for a while- hunting down anything he has said in an interview or written down. Once I saw his book was available on Kindle- I bought it immediately. The manner he explains basic breeding concepts is exceptional. If you don't plan on breeding- the book is still good for just getting into growing cannabis for yourself.
This book has been out of print for some time and is not an easy book to find being it's so cherished by all who have read it the book I received was brand new never open I'm beyond stoked this transaction needs to be rated at 100☆s now I need to purchase another copy to mark up and get dirty I just can't bring myself to start bending and highlighting pages in this collector book
meh. Not so much a guide or instruction book as it is DJ Short reminiscencing. I guess read it if you are bored like I was.
This book teaches you to get the most from your growing in a way that is in tune with your plants. You learn what is important when you grow and the practical advice and tips help immensely. You get insight in DJ Short's philosophy on growing as much as his techniques. A wonderful book, I only wish I had managed to get hold of the print copy. I await with baited breath for the next version.
Created blueberry...what's more to say? Seriously though this is a very simple book on DJ Short's methods. It's more like having a conversation with somebody than reading a book. It may serve as a good basic primer for beginner breeders who don't want to get overly technical, but are looking for a direction to get started with
